My husband used to liken me to the old Fairy Tale, “The Princess and the Pea.” No matter what I did, I would have trouble sleeping and wake up exhausted after a night of tossing and turning. I would not call my old bed comfortable, because I would continuously change positions throughout the night in my sleep to try and avoid tension and pain. This led to feeling tired in the morning. I know there are others out there like me, who experience discomfort while sleeping. I went through trials and tribulations to take back control of my sleep comfort and would like to share my findings with others who are interested.
Rethink Body Position
For me, a traditional mattress was not working. I went to the store and tested out a few types of adjustable beds. After testing out various sleep positions and reading up, I learned that having a slight incline at the head or foot of adjustable beds helps keep you in a proper sleeping position. Your body is less likely to revert to curling up in a ball or bending legs in a way that could be causing pain later on. My findings were corroborated with the National Sleep Foundation who reported that adjustable beds can help alleviate pressure on certain body parts that could be causing sleep discomfort.
Rule Out Underlying Conditions
It’s easy for people to be dismissive about chronic poor sleep when it could be a symptom of a larger concern. The National Sleep Foundation lists several medical issues that have been linked to inability to sleep including headaches, TMJ and back and neck pain. If you have tried everything from major diet and exercise changes to luxury adjustable beds and still are suffering from lack of sleep, it is best to consult with a doctor.
