History of Humble
In the early 19th Century, the first settlers arrived at the site that would later become the City of Humble. Joseph Dunman, who came to Humble in 1828, is believed to be the first arrival. After settlers built a ferry over the nearby San Jacinto River, Humble became an economic and commercial hub for the region.
The city was named after Pleasant Smith “Plez” Humble, one of the area’s original settlers who opened the city’s first post office and served several major roles in the city’s early government.
In the early 20th century, oil was discovered in Humble, and the city transformed from a hub of commerce to an oil boomtown. To accomodate oil shipping, the city was linked to the railroad in 1904. Humble still produces oil from it’s fields, though many of it’s residents have returned to the farming, dairy and timber industries.
