Lake homes for sale are one of the hottest commodities regardless of who you ask or what demographic you’re looking at. Virtually any real estate for sale on a body of water will have significant value. For retirees finding the right piece of property to purchase either to use part-time during the winter months or as an entirely new home is probably one of the biggest decisions you have left to make.
About 13% of the American population (just over 40 million people) are age 65 or older. Chances are you’ve stayed put in the same place due to a job, children’s schooling, or spouses career, but once you’re ready to kick back and enjoy your Golden Years it’s time to start thinking about where you want to spend them. Here are three reasons to look at lake homes for your retirement gift to yourself.

1.) Real Estate Value: One of the most practical and fiscally responsible reasons to buy lake homes, or any piece of real estate on the water, is because the chances of it losing value is virtually non-existent. Sure, there’s always the chance of an economic downturn like the one seen most recently in the late 2000s that could negatively affect the value, but for the most part property located by water will always be in demand. If you held onto some through the Great Recession chances are you’d be able to sell it for more than you paid pretty easily.
2.) Everyday Activities: Aside from being financially savvy, buying a home on the water provides you the opportunity for a plethora of everyday activities. Since you’re retired you’re going to have a lot of free time on your hands and what better way to spend some of it than outside swimming, fishing, boating, or just relaxing in the cool breeze coming off the water? Good health is crucial to a happy retirement (81% of retirees cited it as the most important aspect) and studies show that staying active helps you stay happy. The happiest retirees participated in three to four activities daily, according to one study.
3.) Family Events: The additional benefits of living somewhere where there’s always something for you to do is that it makes for a great place to host family functions and special events. If you moved away from the rest of your family when you retired you’re going to need a place to gather for family events and holidays. It doesn’t take much convincing to get adults and their kids alike excited about a trip to your lake home. Much easier than trying to get the family to come to your cabin in the middle of nowhere or the hassle of getting in and out of a major city.
If you’re nearing or already have retired it’s time to decide where you want to set up your living quarters for the stage in your life that’s meant to be about you and your family. Lake homes and waterfront property in general is the perfect choice for these and many other reasons.
