Kids are supporting our troops and veterans without paying any money. How are they doing it? Teachers and parents are encouraging kids to write letters, birthday cards, and Christmas cards to active military members and vets. “Thanks for protecting our country. [You] must be very brave joining the military. They say a man looks handsome in uniform,” one little girls’ letter begins. “My favorite food is chicken wings, and I like to hang out with my friends.”
Similarly, Americans of all ages can commit to helping military families, U.S. soldiers, and veterans, all without paying anything (or, in some cases, paying very little). What are some of the best — and least expensive ways — to pitch in?
Donate Clothes and Items Without Leaving Home
A growing number of charities pick up clothing donations directly from your home. These charities will save you the troubling of dropping items off, making a special trip, and paying for gas. Similar organizations collect donated items from communal drop off points. For example, plenty of foundations pick up food and toy donates from churches, schools, office buildings, grocery stores, and more.
Be A Friend to a Military Spouse or Military Family
Asking for help can be one of the most difficult things to do. Take the pressure off — and ease any tensions — by proactively offering to do small things for military spouses or military families. One military mom recommends creating creative coupons, good for one night of babysitting or a help with one day’s errands. Place the coupons in gift baskets, and give them to military husbands or wives on holidays, birthdays, and special occasions.
Get Everyone Together
Make it a group effort. Ask friends, family, and neighbors to help organize a potluck dinner or barbecue. Ask for optional clothing donations — or ask guests to donate other necessary items.
Giving back to our troops does not have to be costly or time-consuming. Do what you can by donating clothes from home, getting people together for a potluck dinner, or extending a helping hand to military families.
