How to Get Your RV Ready for Storage in 5 Steps

Car storage facilities

There are many benefits of using a storage facility to park your RV when you’re not using it. You’ll protect your investment from the elements, secure it from break-ins and clear out your parking space for other uses. But it’s important that you prepare your RV for storage properly. Here are the five steps you’ll need to take:

  1. Find the Right Storage Facility

In order to get the benefits of using a storage facility listed above, you’ll need to find self storage units that are high in quality. Carefully inspect prospective facilities to ensure that there are no signs of water damage, rodent problems or bug infestations. Also ask about the security measures the storage company has in place.

  2. Shut Down Systems

Since your RV has mini versions of many of the systems contained in a home, you should expect to spend a little time on this process. Defrost the fridge, unplug appliances, empty your holding tanks, and clean or replace any filters.

  3. Clean and Repair Everything

Spring cleaning may be iconic, but keeping your RV in good shape requires cleaning before storage. As you clean, take care of the small repairs that tend to be overlooked during the camping season — chips or cracks, loose handles, squeaking doors, rusty locks, broken hinges, etc. — and fill any holes or gaps with sealants, caulk or foam. This will prevent rodents from making your RV their winter home.

  4. Winterize If Necessary

If you’re not parking your RV in a climate controlled unit, then it’s important to take a few extra precautions for winter. Run some antifreeze through your water system and remove the battery so you can store it someplace safe. Your owner’s manual might detail some additional steps, so be sure to read it carefully.

  5. Invest In a Good Cover

Once you’ve put all this time into getting your RV into top shape, it’s a good idea to invest in a quality cover. This will keep dust and grime out as long as it fits snugly. Choose a cover made of breathable materials to prevent mold or mildew and to avoid a stale smell when you’re ready to use your RV again. After you put on the cover, it’s time to park your RV in the storage facility and wait for springtime to come — when it does, you’ll be ready to take off on your next adventure.
