What Will Luxury Homes Of The Future Look Like?

Unless something goes seriously wrong in the next few decades, custom designer home builders feel confident they know what the luxury house models of 2050 will look like. By analyzing current and past trends, as well as some trends unrelated to real estate, it’s possible to make some simple predictions about the luxury house floor plans of the future. Of course, futurists of the past thought we would all have flying cars or at least jet packs by now, so who knows? We could all be living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland by then.

So assuming we don’t end up living in a Hollywood dystopia nightmare scenario, what will luxury house models look like in the coming decades? They will likely have the following common features:

  • Multi-Generational and Mixed Families: According to Pew Research, by 2012 57 million U.S. citizens already lived in a home with at least two adult generations. Plus, as the baby boomers age the population of people over 65 is expected to double. In the future, many more U.S. homes will have to accommodate aging relatives. Plus, mixed and blended family types are becoming more common, especially now that gay marriage is the law of the land. That means more homes will feature guest houses, probably with one or two bedrooms and about 1,200 square feet in total size.
  • Eco-Friendly: The home of the future looks green. Not only are solar panels becoming far more affordable, but even in 2015 most luxury house models feature eco-conscious features. On the exterior of custom homes, that means luxury house models with solar panel systems, but on the inside features like new spray foam insulation that can reduce heating costs by as much as 50%, in comparison to the traditional cotton candy like insulation you’re used to. Geothermal systems are also increasingly popular; such systems use 25 – 50% less energy than regular heating systems.
  • Smart Houses: Already, luxury custom home builders say more U.S. homeowners want smart systems integrated into their designer home plans. Smart systems allow residents to control everything from lighting, heating, security, and entertainment options with their smartphones, tablets, or some other weird, future device.

There’s a popular saying about the years to come, “The future is something you haven’t even thought of yet.” And that’s the truth; there are many trends in luxury house models no one will be able to predict. Still, luxury house floor plans are likely to contain at least one of these increasingly common features.
